Obverse
On the obverse of American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins, you will find a depiction of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. Designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this visual shows Liberty with a torch held up in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The U.S. Capitol Building is present in the background field, with the figure of Liberty silhouetted by the rays of the sun and a ring of stars around the design element. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read LIBERTY .
Reverse
The reverse side of the American Eagle Gold Coin comes with a vision of the American bald eagle. The eagles head is set in left-profile relief with incredible levels of detail in its plumage. Designed in 2020 by Jennie Norris, this is the first change to the visuals on the American Eagle Gold Coin in its history. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.
History
The redesign of the American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin occurred in mid-2021. After featuring the image of a family of bald eagles from Miley Busiek on the reverse from 1986 to early 2021, the US Mint debuted this new design from Jennie Norries midway through the 35th-anniversary year for the series.
The obverse design of the Gold Eagle features Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch and an olive branch. The reverse features a male eagle carrying an olive branch, protecting a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.
