As she walks toward the sun, she wears the American flag over her shoulders and carries branches of oak and laurel in her left hand. Inscriptions include Liberty and In God We Trust.

History

Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty design won a US Mint and Treasury Department design contest in 1916. Despite initial struggles to strike the design well, the US Mint went on to use the Walking Liberty design on the half dollar until 1947. Since 1986, it has served as the obverse design of the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins.
